Israman-Samsung 2012 - Race Briefing

The main event is approaching and with it various questions regarding the race, the course and the general preparation.
In order to make it easier on the athletes, we have published on the Israman-Samsung website, the full guide line of the race.  Please read it carefully.
A Professional staff will be attended through out the race for any question or need.
At the day of the race, we assure you that we will do all it takes to ensure a safe and enjoyable race day.

  1. On Friday the 20th of January 2012, at 06:15 the Israman-Samsung 2012 race will officially begin by the Royal Beach Hotel in Eilat.
  2. Time table for the athletes:
  3. Wednsday the 18th:
      1. 14:00-19:00 - Check In at the Royal Garden hotel
  1. Thursday the 19th:
      1. 08:30 - Check In
      2. 10:00 - Swimming session with Nina Pekerman
      3. 11:30 - Cycling session with Dora Heller and Matan Kasif/li>
      4. 14:00 – Race briefing in Hebrew in “WOW” auditorium at the Royal Garden Hotel.
      5. 15:30 – English briefing.
      6. 17:00-20:00 Biking check-in at Transition Area (T-1), collecting Participants bags for T-2 and Special Needs bag.
    1. Friday the 20th –: Race Day
      1. 05:15 – Transition Area (T-1) will be open for competitors only.
      2. 05:30 – Swimming starting point will be open for warm up.
      3. 06:05 – Sterile area will open for Professional rank athletes.
      4. 06:10 – All age groups athletes attend at swimming starting point.
      5. 06:15 – Full distance including full distance relays start swimming.
      6. 06:20 – Half distance and half relays start swimming.
      7. 08:30 - Cut off time for swimmers still in water.
      8. 17:30 – Cut off time for biking.
      9. 23:30 – Officially closure of running course and race.
    1. Saturday the 21th:
      1. 11:00 - Beach party, trophy and prize ceremony at the Royal Beach
  1. Duties and responsibilities:
    1. Across the race course there will be official staff and volunteers to take care of the logistic various aspects of the race, enforce competition regulations and assist the competitors.
      1. Event Manager – Tal Chimbalista
      2. Professional staff members of all three disciplines – Swimming, biking, running and their personal assistants, including relays, will be attended.
      3. Race personnel in charge of the swimming beach, T-1, T-2, will be attended.
      4. Official Referees in cars, motorcycles, bikes will patrol the biking and running course.
      5. Marshals on motorcycles and on location will guide competitors in every cross section, etc.
      6. Israeli Police Force will control non-race traffic, blocking roads and general security of the race day.
      7. In addition, Israeli military will be in charge of security in sea and land.
      8. Technical crews will be driving along the biking course for any technical failure while biking.
      9. Volunteers from Eilat will be positioned in feeding station and transition areas.

  1. Check-In:
    1. As of Wednesday the 18th at 13:00 o’clock, the official check-in area will be open at the entrance hall in the lobby of the Royal Garden Hotel.
    2. The organizing team of the Israman-Samsung 2012, will be at the Royal Garden lobby. 
    3. Each participant will go through an orderly process of registration.
    4. The registration process will include, assigning a personal race chip, wrist bend, participant race number (running and biking), a personal race bag for T-2 (transition from biking to running) and a bag with sponsors snacks, jells and goodies.
    5. Transition area at T-1 will be completely sterile and restricted to race participants only.  Entrance to T-1 area will be allowed only by wearing the wrist bend. Taking out the bike, after the race, will be permitted only with the wrist bend.
  2. Course Description:
    1. The course will include three parts:
    2. General Description:
      1. Swimming - Will take place in the northern part of Eilat bay – starting point from Royal beach.
      2. Biking – From Eilat all the way up to Netafim, straight to Sayarim (half distance turn around), on to Neot Semadar (full distance only) and back to netafim.
      3. Running - From netafim (T-2) towards the city of Eilat. Straight to the southern promenade and the northern promenade, circling the marine area and finishing at the Royal Garden Hotel.
    1. Swimming:
      1. Swimming will take place in the northern part of Eilat bay – starting point from Royal beach.
      2. Swimming will be held in a triangle course of 1,900 meters. Swimming will be clock wise direction. Half distance will swim the course only once.
      3. Full distance will swim the course twice.  After first round, the swimmers of the full distance will get out of the water, step on measurement carpet and on to the second round.
      4. All swimmers must verify that they step on measurement carpet.
      5. The swim starts along the longest side of the triangle, towards east.
      6. First swim will start at 06:15 for the full distance participants and full relays. Second swim will start at 06:20 for the half distance and half distance relays participants.
      7. Professional athletes will be positioned in the front and will wear a different color swimming cap.
      8. A lead boat will be ahead of the leading swimmer.
      9. Another boat will be positioned in the water in order to maintain control and safety of the swimmers.
      10. Swimming inside the triangle is forbidden.
      11. As swimmers get out of the water they will run on the measurement carpet to T-1.
      12. Washing shower, located close to the water exit, will be available for swimmers as they finish the swim as well as a drinking water position.
    1. Transition Area (T-1) Sport Hotel:
      1. The Participants will run to T-1 where the bike and equipment were left the evening before (under strict security personnel).
      2. As the participant will be ready to exit with his bike, he must make sure all swimming gear will be left inside the personal equipment box (will be provided by the organizers).
      3. Up to the starting point of biking, the participants must be with their helmet secured on the head as they walk the bike.
      4. Biking will be allowed only with an approved standard issue helmet.

    1. Biking Course:
      1. The biking course will take place on route 12. Will start near to Sport hotel; continue the ascent to netafim, heading north to Sayarim, continuing to Neot Smadar (turning back) up to Ein Netafim – T-2. Ein Netafim is located 1.3K east to Ma’avar Netafim.
      2. Half Distance Biking Course: Will start near to Sport hotel, by pass the airport, by pass shachmon square, Ein Netafim, Ma’avar Netafim, Sayarim and back to Ein Netafim (T2).
      3. Full Distance Biking Course: Starts as the half distance to Ein Netafim, Sayarim, than continuing north, up to Neot Smadar, turning around back to Ein Netafim, turn north to Segov Mountain, back to Ein-Netafim (T-2).

    1. Running Course:
      1. The parallel part for half and Long distance: The run starts at Ein Netafim (T-2) and descending east towards the city of Eilat up to Shachmon square. The course is turning south on derech hayam street where it meets with Ein Yahav street.  From there, it continues east all the way to meridian square. From Meridian Square, running along the promenade and around the lagoon – RUNNING ON THE BRIDGE IS FORBIDDEN. The distance of that part is 12K.
      2. The Half Distance running part only: from meridian square, the course continues south on the promenade, until the southern turning point - 3K south of meridian square and from there same route to the square – a total of 18K. From Meridian Square, running along the promenade and around the lagoon. RUNNING ON THE BRIDGE IS FORBIDDEN. Course continuing to derben square, all the way to the large bridge. From here it continues along the promenade up to the parking lot, between Royal Beach hotel and Dan Hotel. At the parking lot, the course by pass Royal Beach hotel all the way to the finish line which is located in the front of the Royal Garden hotel – A total of 21 Km. 
      3. The Full Distance running part only: From Meridian Square, at a distance of 2,360 meter north to the square, the course will run parallel to the half distance running course. The full distance will pass Royal Garden hotel (close to the finish line) and continue to meridian square. This course will be completed twice and on the third time it will end in the finish line at Royal Garden hotel.
      4. Finish Line:  In the front of the Royal Garden hotel. The final 150 meters will have a U shape in order to enable all the cheering audience to see their athlete family members and friends.
  1. Feeding Zones names and locations:
    1. The race course will pass several feeding stations and logistic stops.
      1. The Beach- Part of the Royal Beach Hotel. Area designated for the swimming course.
      2. T-1: Transition Area from swimming to biking in the area of Sport Hotel.
      3. Ein Netafim (North)-Water station toward the end of the ascent. A designated point Will is the point of turn and for “Special Needs” bags for the full distance athletes.
      4. Sayarim-Feeding station for the half and full distance. Will continue to act as a feeding zone for the full distance competitors, as they return from “Neot Smadar”.
      5. Neot Smadar-A feeding and “special needs” zone for the full distance competitors.
      6. Har Segov (Mount)-the 20th Km, north to Netafim. The northern turning point for completing the full distance. Water station only.
      7. Ein Netafim (T-2)-Transition station from biking to running. A full feeding zone which will include refreshing beverages (coca cola).

All participants will deposit their personal bag and “Special Needs” for the T-2 the evening before the race.

      1. Running (3.5K)-A water station and a light feeding station.
      2. Running (6.5K)-A water station and a light feeding station.
      3. Kikar Shachmon (Square-8K)-in the “derech hayam” street. A full feeding zone.
      4. Chativat Hanegev (10K)-A light feeding station.
      5. Meridian Square (12K)-A full feeding zone, including fresh beverages and “special needs”. The half distance will cross it twice; the full distance will cross it six times.
      6. Dolphin Reef beach (15K)-The southern turning point for the half distance runners. A light feeding station. Will serve the full distance as well.
      7. The split (21K)-the northern turning point for the full distance. On “hayam” street a full feeding station. The runners will pass it three times and will continue to the finish line. 
    1. Feeding Zone standard:
      1. A full feeding zone will include: water, isoton, bread, fruits, snack bars, gels.
      2. A light feeding station will include: water, dates, bread.
      3. The full feeding zones at Ein Netafim and Meridian will include refreshing soft beverages.
  1. Bike deposit at T-1, transition to running and returning the bike back (from T-2):
    1. At the eve of the race (19.1) between the 17:00 – 20:00, the competitors will deposit their bikes at the transition area (T-1) by the race designated area of “Sport Hotel”.
    2. Every competitor will be given a bike position with his competitor’s race number. The competitor’s position will include: a bike stand, a chair, a box for personal equipment.
    3. At the entrance gate at T-1, a technical biking safety checks will be held. After wards, the participant will place his bike to his personal position.
    4. Following the bike deposit at T-1, the technical team will carry the bags to T-2. Athlete number must be attached to the running bag.
    5. As the athlete will arrive to T-2, a care person will handle the bike. All bikes will be returned to “Sport Hotel” and will be taken care in maximum attention.
    6. As the athlete will start the run, all of his personal equipment will be placed in his personal bag and return to “Sport Hotel”.
  1. Directions and signs:
    1. The entire race course will be posted with direction signs as well as directions to the transition area.
    2. Swimming Course-will be signaled with buoy which on some of them will be posted distance marks.
    3. Biking Course-will be signaled by post signs every 20 Km. signs will also mark the turning point and feeding zone.
    4. Running course-will be signaled every 1 Km as well as signs which will post above the race course.
    5. The start line, transition areas, feeding zones, and finish line will be signaled in a clear manner.
  2. Special Needs (Full distance only):
    1. Only athletes of the full distance will deposit nylon bags with the race number for personal needs such as: isotonic, food, etc.
    2. The special needs bag deposit will take place at the same time of bike and running bag deposit.
    3. The special needs bags stations are: Neot Smadar, Ein Netafim (North), Meridian Square.
  3. Time Measurement:
    1. 4 Sport is the company chosen to operate the time measurement at the race.
    2. Every athlete must have with him a personal chip, either yellow or blue.
    3. Participants, who do not obtain a chip, will be given one by the organizers.
    4. IMPORTANT: An athlete that has a personal chip with him is strongly advised to bring it with him. The reason for that is due to the fact that the 4 sport measuring system is connected to the international data and switching chips may cause the system miss the name of the participant.

 

    1. Location of measurement carpets:
      1. On the water line as getting out of the water.
      2. Beginning of the biking course.
      3. Turning point of the half distance biking at Sayarim.
      4. In the southern turn of the full distance biking turn at ein netafim. This point will use all athletes as they come off their bike.
      5. As running starts from en netafim.
      6. At the 10th Km of the running course.
      7. In the southern turn of both distances at the area of Dolphin Reef.
      8. At the turning point towards the finish line, close to Royal Beach Hotel.
      9. Finish Line.
  1. Competition Rules:
    1. The competition is in accord to the rules of the ITU.
    2. Since the competition is taking place over a large area, we believe that honesty and fairness will motivate its athletes.

Swimming:

    1. Swimming cap colors-full distance-white, half distance-blue, relays-in accord to the distance.
    2. The swim will start from the beach along the long side of the triangle. Running into the water is forbidden.
    3. The swim will be divided into two groups.
    4. It is mandatory to wear a cap for the relevant distance.
    5. Leading athletes will start from a sterile area.
    6. All athletes getting out of the water must step on the measurement carpet. Full distance – twice. When getting out of the water for the first turn and the second time when finishing the swim. The half distance-only when finishes one round of swim, as going out of the water.

Biking:

    1. Biking will be only on the right side of the road, as close as possible to the yellow shoulders.
    2. Marshals and Referees will keep track of illegal drafting rules.
    3. In T-2 there will be a “penalty box”.  Penalty will be five minutes wait as getting of the bike.
    4. First penalty of drafting is five minutes at the “penalty box”, a second warning will cause to an immediate full stop of the athlete in the race.

Running:

    1. Cut off time for running is 17:40.
    2. Every athlete who starts to run after 16:30, will be given a flash light. 
    3. It is forbidden to accompany the runners but in the final running course. From the 40th Km to the full distance and the 19th to the half distance. The running control will be made by the number of wrist bends of each athlete.

Relays:

    1. Relay athletes will participate on the same course as the full and half distance athletes.
    2. All rules of the Israman-Samsung 2012 race will apply for the relays as well.
    3. The relay will be identified as the swimmer passes his chip on to the other members of the relay.
      1.  Between the swimming and the biking at T-1, as the athlete will wait by his bike, passing the chip will take place as the bike are still on the biking wrack.

      1. Between the biking and the running at T-2, the runner will arrive to ein-netafim with a car driven by one of the organizers and will wait at T-2 until the arrival of his relay member who is riding.  As the biker will arrive, his name will be called out loud and the runner will approach the funnel between the bike parking zone and the running zone. In the running zone the chip will be passed to the runner.
      1. The athlete who finished the biking part will be driven back to Eilat by the organizers car.

 

      1. It is forbidden to ride back to Eilat. An athlete, who will ride back to Eilat, will dismiss all the athletes of his relay.
      1. The biking and runners of the relay can deposit a bag with warm clothing which will be waiting for them at T-2 area (ein-netafim).
  1. Ceremony and Awards:
    1. On Friday 20th, as the competition carries on, we will conduct a medal ceremony close to the finish line at the front of the Royal Garden Hotel. The ceremony will include the winners of the full and half distance.
    2. On Saturday, as we all had a good rest, we will conduct the main ceremony for the winners of the various categories. The ceremony will take place at the large lawn, where T-1 was positioned. The ceremony will start at 10:30.
